A 34-year-old man, Humpry Matekoa, has been remanded in custody by the Kwamhlanga Magistrate's Court, Mpumalanga police said.

He appeared in court on December 6, for allegedly strangling his partner, 31-year-old Bontle Lorraine Modikoe, to death.

The incident reportedly occurred in Tweefontein on Wednesday, December 4, at around 10pm.

Officers responded to a distress call at a residence in Thokoza, where they discovered Modikoe's lifeless body.

Matekoa and his father were at the scene. Medical personnel, who attended the scene, confirmed that Modikoe died.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Matekoa allegedly strangled Modikoe during what police describe as a "domestic-related conflict" that escalated fatally.

“The motive for the killing forms part of Police's ongoing investigation,” said police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli.

Major General Dr. Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Mpumalanga Commissioner, condemned the crime in no uncertain terms.

“We consider this incident as a total disrespect and disregard to the efforts that the state, together with civil society, are trying to make in fighting Gender-Based Violence," Mkhwanazi said.

"The law should definitely deal decisively with such people who perpetrate violence against women and children."

Matekoa is expected to appear again at the Kwamhlanga Magistrate's Court on December 17 as investigations continue.
