THE mother of slain Effingham teenager, Mikai Joshua Chetty, who was found with his throat slit next to the body of his grandmother in October last year, was found unconscious in an Umdloti holiday flat, on Monday.
Head of Reaction Unit SA, Prem Balram, said the 54-year-old woman was found unconscious and with multiple stab wounds in the holiday flat she had apparently rented with her boyfriend for two weeks.
“We received frantic calls about the woman lying on the bed, covered in blood. She sustained open wounds to her neck, hands and feet. A large, blood-stained butcher’s knife was found near her.
“When her boyfriend arrived at the flat, he found her lying on the bed covered in blood. Further information received indicated that the woman was an Effingham resident who was suffering from depression. It has been alleged that she had been contemplating suicide,” said Balram.
On October 2, 2024, the woman, her mother Nadhira Essack, 74, and her son Mikai, 13, were found dead in their Effingham home. They had been missing for about three days.
Mikai’s school transport driver became suspicious when he did not pitch for school and notified his relatives.
Police and security companies were the alerted.
The woman, Mikai and Essack were found locked inside their home.
Mikai was found with his throat slit. His grandmother had been strangled to death. Mikai’s body was found on the floor next to his grandmother’s bed, where her lifeless body lay.
The woman was found with lacerations to her throat, hands and legs. She was the sole survivor, and claimed she could not remember what had happened.
Mikai’s dad, Shardin Lance Chetty, 37, told the POST he was notified of his ex-wife’s alleged suicide attempt yesterday.
“This news comes six months after the death of my son. Seeing his son’s lifeless body was a sight that haunts me every day. It's difficult waking up to the reality of not having my son.
“But the matter is still under investigation and although the investigations stalled for a few months, police are hands-on and are working on the case. There are still no arrests. I'm leaving it to the authorities at this stage,” he said.
