The Western Cape Government (WCG) has confirmed an investigation into the horror crash along Van Rhyns Pass that claimed the lives of nine people on Monday.

It said the bus, which was carrying 44 farmworkers headed to Ceres, was safely removed from the mountainous scene on Wednesday, September 5, under secure conditions.

The South African Police Services (SAPS) has informed the WCG that the bus was taken to a specialised facility where it will undergo a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

The Western Cape Mobility Department acknowledged the importance of waiting for the SAPS to complete its investigation before drawing any conclusions. It called on the public to, in the best interest of the injured and the families and loved ones, of those who lost their lives, not to speculate about any matter related to the accident, while these investigations are ongoing.

The Western Cape Government extended its heartfelt gratitude to the emergency services, law enforcement, medical, and rescue and recovery teams who responded swiftly to the scene.

Western Cape MEC for Mobility, Isaac Sileku, thanked the regional office of the Mobility Department, the SAPS and all the other emergency and rescue agents who assisted the injured at the scene.

“I am grateful for the way all the units worked together. They worked throughout the night to support all the passengers.

The minister also thanked the various WCG departments for working together to support the families and loved ones of the injured and deceased.

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, through Forensic Pathology Services, are working with urgency to finalise the processes concerning the deceased.

MEC for Health and Wellness, Mireille Wenger said it is a painful time for the families and loved ones, and the team is committed to providing the necessary dignity and support throughout this difficult journey.

“My thoughts and condolences are with those affected by this tragedy. I would once again like to thank our dedicated EMS and hospital teams who responded with great urgency and care, as well as our forensic pathology teams whose work is necessary to ensure the dignity of the deceased and closure for their families,” Wenger said.

Sileku said the Mobility Department remains committed to ensuring the safety of all residents on Western Cape roads. The department again urges drivers, especially those transporting large numbers of passengers, to prioritise vehicle fitness and adhere to road safety rules. Safe driving practices are essential to prevent further loss of life on our roads.

"The accident has left the patients and their families, and also the next of kin of the deceased, with indescribable sorrow. It is going to take a long time to process the sadness of the accident and I pray for everyone affected by it. I pray for physical and emotional healing.

“My department and I will do everything possible to prevent a similar tragedy. As we await the outcome of the SAPS investigation, the Department of Mobility will continue its efforts to enhance road safety and support initiatives that protect the lives of all road users. Together, we can create safer roads for all,” Sileku said.
