The Select Committee on Social Services has welcomed the announcement made by Minister of Social Development, Nokuxola Tolashe on the suspension of the CEO of the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) Busisiwe Memela-Khambula.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, pending the outcome of an investigation into the CEO’s appointment.

Tolashe said the suspension is prompted by the need to conduct an investigation without hindrance or interference given Memela-Khambula’s position as CEO of Sassa

Committee chairperson, Desery Fienies commended the minister for her commitment to transparency and accountability.

“We commend the Minister for recognising the importance of maintaining public trust in our institutions, especially those that serve our most vulnerable citizens,” Fienies said.

“The challenges faced by Sassa are significant, and it is imperative that we navigate them with integrity and diligence.”

The chairperson said in light of the issues raised by the Office of the Public Protector, the Committee supports the Minister’s decision to act in the best interest of Sassa and its beneficiaries.

“It is crucial for the agency to uphold its mandate to provide social assistance effectively and efficiently to those who rely on it for their livelihoods,” Fienies said.

It also welcomed the appointment of Themba Matlou as the Acting CEO during this period.

“His leadership will be vital in ensuring that Sassa continues to operate smoothly while the investigation is underway,” Fienies said.

“The committee remains committed to oversight and will monitor the situation closely to ensure that the investigation is conducted fairly and expediently.”
