Eskom fraud accused Michael Harry Lomas has been granted R2 million bail.
The ruling was delivered in The Johannesburg High Court on Monday.
Lomas and 11 others are facing 65 counts of corruption relating to the R1,4 billion meant for constructing Eskom’s Kusile power station in Mpumalanga.
He was extradited from the United Kingdom in September and has been incarcerated since his extradition.
The National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA’s) Investigating Directorate said Lomas's bail conditions include that his United Kingdom passport and his South African identity document be surrendered to the investigating officer.
"The court ordered that he be barred from applying for travel documents, and reside at a care home where he will be provided with the necessary assistance," said spokesperson Henry Mamothame.
The IDAC said the details of the home are to be provided to the investing officer and that Lomas should not leave the Gauteng jurisdiction without informing the Investigating officer.
"We note and respect the judgment, with stringent conditions attached to it. Our focus will now be on the trial ahead, set to commence on 20 July 2026."
The IDAC opposed the application because Lomas is a flight and suicide risk based on the reports by two psychiatrists sourced by him in the United Kingdom during his extradition hearing, wherein they declared him to be a suicide risk.
IOL previously reported that Lomas was arrested on 15 April 2021 in London and granted hefty bail of £100, 000 (R1.7 million in April 2021), and he further submitted an additional surety of £250,000 (about R4.3 million in April 2021).
