"This exam was tough and we thank all the students for their dedication and commitment as well as the teachers who assisted," said Lesufi.
He said that there was no municipality in Gauteng that had scored less than an 80 percent matric pass rate, with more than 38,000 distinctions nationally. The MEC said 22 percent of the distinctions were achieved by learners from Gauteng.
"... Gauteng basic education system is maturing. We are on track to achieving a 90 percent (pass rate) by the end of our term in 2019. Gauteng is the fastest growing provincial system in the country," said Lesufi.
Earlier, Lesufi congratulated the Free State which surpassed Gauteng and the Western Cape, to record the highest pass rate average in the NSC examinations for 2016. "It wasn't an easy task," noted Lesufi.
