Johannesburg - The MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Mthandeni Dlungwana, announced on Tuesday that writing of National Senior Certificate examinations had been successfully completed in the province.
“I want to thank learners, parents, teachers, district and provincial officials, for their tireless work, this department wouldn’t achieve any of its goals if it wasn’t for their dedication. Those long hours and sleepless nights were results of their ambitions to fulfil the mandate of this Department. They did just exactly what was expected from them,” said Dlungwana in a statement.
Dlungwana said the department of education was now ready for the start of the marking of the Grade 12 exam scripts and that marking would commence on December 5 and conclude ten days later.
“All 27 marking centres will open on Thursday and trucks will deliver the answer scripts and question papers to marking centres, and 66 chief markers, 221 deputy chief markers and 1 580 senior markers and 9 719 markers will arrive at the marking centres on Thursday,” said Dlungwana.
According to Dlungwana, memorandum discussion and training of markers, as well as sample marking, would start on Thursday. The final capturing of marks and the closing of marking centres would take place on December 18.
“Marking guidelines for use in the marking of the question papers will be discussed and standardised. The department, together with examiners and chief markers and the Umalusi moderators will interrogate the marking guidelines to ensure that they accurately reflect the responses demanded of all questions,” said Dlungwana.
“The Department will monitor the marking process and will deploy moderators to marking centres to ensure that quality marking is implemented across all marking centres. The Department is confident that the marking of the 2016 NSC examination will be successfully administered.”
In the last week of December a national standardisation process will take place where marks for various subjects are standardised and approved by the examinations body Umalusi, and once the information was checked and verified, Umalusi would approve the release of the Grade 12 results.
Schools would be able to collect the results from district offices on the morning of January 5.
