The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said it had launched an investigation on KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for allegedly interfering with the arrest of a senior Correctional Services official.

According to IPID spokesperson Lizzy Shuping, the alleged incident occurred in Richards Bay in 2023.

"IPID has requested the Provincial Commissioner to submit a sworn statement by 19 March 2025.

Shuping said it should be noted that the letter written to Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi, by IPID’s Acting Head of Investigations, that the Police Minister requested IPID to investigate the Provincial Commissioner, was erroneously written.

"This investigation is as a result of an anonymous complaint from the public."

Shuping said IPID maintains that although it receives complaints and tip offs from various sources, its investigations remain independent and impartial.

"The investigation is still in its infancy stages, and IPID will only engage on the matter once the investigation is concluded."

Meanwhile in an exclusive interview with IOL last week, Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi said he was tightening the noose on corrupt officials within his ranks.

He said there was a smear campaign aimed at getting him to back off.

"I'm closing the taps on abuse and internal corruption and that's why I'm being targeted but it won't stop me. One of the things we are dealing with is the SAPS Secret Fund."

Mkhwanazi said what he discovered is that there are officials and some senior politicians who are making a lot of money out of this secret fund.
