Matriculant Ndumiso Ndamane expected to do well in maths but achieving 100% passes in both maths and physical science and being awarded for his achievements was an exciting surprise.

Ndumiso, of uMlazi Comprehensive Technical High School, also achieved distinctions in isiZulu and electrical technology.

The 18-year-old proudly handed his prizes - a laptop and certificate - to his parents after getting his first award before making his way back to the stage for another accolade from the KZN Department of Education at a ceremony at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre yesterday.

His father, Bonginkosi, said he believed extended school hours, extra classes and studying late into the night, even when his son went home to Avoca from boarding school for holidays, was what had pushed him to the top.

“He worked hard because he had a vision, and he focused and worked towards that vision,” said Bonginkosi.

Ndumiso said he enjoyed a normal teenage life while focused on his studies.

He added that when he strayed from his vision, his parents and his former principal, Lucky Luthuli, were always on hand to support and encourage him back onto the right path.

He hopes to continue to excel as he pursues an electrical engineering degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal this year.

Bonginkosi said: “I will continue to pray for him as any parent prays for their child, but I do not have any fear.

“He has shown that he is independent and focused.

“I have no anxiety about his future.”
