KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested five men and seized firearms and ammunition in a sting operation in Mandeni, on Friday.
"Police were conducting a Vehicle Check Point (VCP) operation along the P459 Road in Mandeni when they stopped a white Toyota Avanza with five male occupants.
"Upon searching the vehicle, the occupants were found in possession of five pistols and several rounds of ammunition. Two firearms had their serial numbers erased," said spokesperson for the South African Police Services (SAPS) in KZN, Colonel Robert Netshiunda.
He said so far, investigations have revealed that one of the guns belonged to a deceased person, while another gun was stolen in Ntuzuma in November 2020. A third firearm was stolen in Sandton in June 2021.
Netshiunda said the suspects, aged between 23 and 31, have been charged and will appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
They face charges of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, and possession of suspected stolen firearms.
