A bus caught fire on the M3 highway near Newlands Forest before 7am on Tuesday morning, causing significant traffic delays and a minor blaze in surrounding grassy areas.

According to News24 reports, nearby residents reported hearing a "loud bang" and seeing "considerable smoke" as the fire engulfed the bus and spread to the roadside vegetation.

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse told News24 that firefighters from Wynberg and Salt River were dispatched to the scene. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported.

City Traffic spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout told News24 that the bus was on the outbound side of the highway, obstructing both outbound lanes and leading to morning traffic disruptions.

Emergency services worked to control the fire and restore traffic flow as quickly as possible.
