Pretoria - After many postponements, Sipho Nkosi, who faces an attempted murder charge after he allegedly slit the throat of an 8-year-old girl in Mamelodi, is set to apply for bail.

Nkosi was in a relationship with the mother of the girl at the time of the incident in April. He will now formally apply for bail, which will be heard on August 25 by the Pretoria Regional Court.

Nkosi initially abandoned his bail application in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court.

He was arrested after he handed himself over to the Hammanskraal police station.

The father of the victim said the incident and the court case had affected the family badly.

The girl was doing well, her father said.

“She is very fragile. She is a very strong-willed young girl who fought hard to survive that horrible, senseless attack.”

The father had attended all the accused’s court hearings.

“I am not able to work as I would love to because I want to do all I can to get justice for my daughter. As the family we are unable to resume our normal lives as we always wonder what could happen next and what is it that we can do to speed up this process without hindering justice.

“It is tough, but we are determined to go all the way.” The man, who cannot be named to protect the child, said they still had hope, but were disappointed that the suspect was still attempting to get bail.

“We have faith in our justice system and we will do our best to get our voices heard so we can save the lives of more women and children.

“We hope and pray that he does not get bail, our women and children will not be safe.

“The Silverton police have been looking for this suspect since 2019 and he has been running away from them until they heard that he is in custody after this attempted murder case. He is very dangerous.”

The father said the family asked for the community to rally behind them.
