Katlego Matlala, one of the top-performing matriculants at Forte High School in Soweto, says the highlight of her 2024 academic year was being recognised for her performance at school.

“My matric journey was one of the best as I was a top achiever and being recognised for the first time in my life all my hard work did pay off. Being part of the top learners at Forte high school and getting all the gifts, and trips but mostly making my name known.”

Katlego also had to deal with difficulties as she comes from a disadvantaged background. “I don't wanna lie, it wasn't an easy journey, with the extra classes, waking up at night having to study all the class tests. But all this was worth it, as it helped me to obtain good marks. It was hard as I lived in a disadvantaged household, having to study using a candle, but I did manage as I knew I had to change my situation.”

The disruptions caused by COVID-19 resulted in Katleho missing out on valuable lessons at the start of Grade 8, during the peak of the pandemic.

“It affected my academics as it disrupted my learning journey and I missed out on a lot of activities and lessons that I think and believe would have brought a lot of change and improvement in my academics. It caused me to miss many lessons and activities that I believe could have significantly improved my academic performance.”

The 18-year-old aspires to become a teacher, a dream she has held since childhood. “Teaching has been something I wanted to pursue since I was a young girl because I wanted to bring change, motivate, and inspire all black children in my community. I hope to study at NWU, as it is one of the best universities.”

She added: “I would advise the class of 2025 to focus on their studies. Matric is not hard; all it needs is your full attention and focus. Enjoy and embrace this journey. Wish you all the best. Respect your educators, and love them as they will be guiding you throughout this journey.”
