Team SA Paris Olympics wrap: Golfers in contention as sprint trio qualify for 100m semis

Team South Africa’s Akani Simbine, Shaun Maswanganyi and Benjamin Richardson qualified for the men’s 100m semi-finals.

Simbine won heat six in a time of 10.03, while Maswanganyi was third in heat three, finishing in a time of 10.06. Richardson managed to qualify as one of the fastest losers after finishing outside of the top three in his heat. He also ran a 10.06.

The men’s golfers Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Erik van Rooyen are on 8-under-par heading into Sunday’s final round of the golf competition at the Paris Olympics.

Bezuidenhout and Van Rooyen are six shots adrift of the leaders Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm, who are tied on 14-under par.

Rower Paige Badenhorst finished second in the women’s C final of the single sculls, which gave her 14th place overall.

The women’s hockey team suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to the United States, while cyclist Ryan Gibbons finished 69th in the men’s road race.

Men’s 100m, first round, heats: 3. Shaun Maswangani (10.06).

Men’s 100m, first round, heats: 4. Benjamin Richardson (10.06). Richardson progressed to the semi-finals as one of the fastest losers.

Men’s 100m, first round, heats: 1. Akani Simbine (10.03).

Men’s 1500m repechage: Tshepo Tshite finished 4th in his race in 3:35.45 and Ryan Mphahlele finished 11th in his heat in 3:36.64.

CYCLING

Men’s road race: Ryan Gibbons finished 69th, nearly 20 minutes behind gold medallist Remco Eveneoel of Belgium.
