South African football icon Jomo Sono has hailed the job Hugo Broos has done to turn Bafana Bafana’s fortunes around.
Under the belgian, South Africa’s international football stature has grown. Earlier this year, Bafana returned from the Africa Cup of Nations with a bronze medal, while they are on course to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Speaking to the media, Sono, who coached the national team during the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations and 2002 World Cup, said he was impressed with what Broos has done.
“I think he’s doing a good job. We must not take the fact away that he’s doing a good job. I think he will stay longer if he can survive you guys [the media]. I think he will stay longer,” Sono said, according to iDiskiTimes.
“You know when he started he was being character assassinated left, right, and centre and he proved all of us wrong, But I think he’s a good coach and doing very well.”
Bafana are next in action on Tuesday evening when they face Congo in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Broos’ men will be hoping to pick up where they left off following their 5-0 win in Gqeberha against the central African nations. A win in Brazzaville could see South Africa move to the top of Group K, but that will also depend on the result between Uganda and South Sudan.
With two games remaining after Tuesday’s clash, picking up the maximum three points on the night will see Bafana put one foot in next year’s tournament in Morocco.
Tuesday’s game against Congo will kick off at 6pm, and will be broadcast on SABC 3 and om SABC+.
