Liverpool legend Ian Rush is loving the football The Reds are playing under new coach Arne Slot, but has not written off Manchester City despite their torrid run of late.

Liverpool top the English Premier League table with 35 points from 14 games. Chelsea are second with 31 points from 15 matches. Arsenal are third on 29, with City fourth on 27.

City broke a seven-match winless run, as they beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 in their English Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium last week.

That run included six defeats which was the worst stretch of Pep Guardiola’s career as City coach.

City, however, followed that win up with a 2-2 draw away at Crystal Palace.

When Liverpool met City on December 1, the Merseyside outfit ran out convincing 2-0 winners.

The gulf between the two teams was apparent even though in the last seven seasons, City have won six league titles to the one of Liverpool.

“Arne Slot has been fantastic, he’s made a brilliant start,” Rush told SportsBoom.com in an exclusive interview.

“I was on pre-season tour with him and it went well there, he’s had a great impact."

“The Premier League is obviously a lot harder, but he’s done an unbelievable job so far. He’s only lost one league match so far, which is a great record considering he only took over this summer.”

With 24 games to go including clashes against Tottenham and Manchester United looming over the next month, Liverpool will do well to extend their gap at the top.

“There’s still a long way to go and some big games coming up, but the club is in a great position.

“And some of those big games are at Anfield, so that does help. They’re really heading in the right direction.”

Too early to call it

As for the City challenge, at eight points behind it was far too soon to discount the Cityzens as title challengerers believed Rush.

“Manchester City might have lost some games, but I’d never write City off,” said Rush

“Liverpool beat them, but City always come good in January, always. January, for me, is the most important part of the season.”
