Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu has finally landed himself a new club. On Tuesday, Zungu was officially unveiled by the KwaZulu-Natal-based club AmaZulu after signing on a free transfer.

Zungu has been without a club since leaving Sundowns at the end of last season, and has been linked with both Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in that time.

However, AmaZulu, co-coached by former Kaizer Chiefs boss Arthur Zwane have won the race for his signature.

Speaking on his decision to join AmaZulu, who find themselves all the way down in 13th place in the Betway Premiership, said his personal goal was to help the club climb up the league while also having an influence on the younger players. And, he also targeted trophies.

“Everywhere I’ve played, I’ve managed to win trophies, and I want to bring that same winning mentality here. I know what it takes to win, and it’s my aim,” the 32-year-old midfielder was quoted by KickOff on Tuesday.

“I’m also thrilled to be coached by Arthur Zwane and Vusi Vilakazi.

“I’ve watched AmaZulu’s games, and the team players the modern game. My understanding of the game will help the team, but I know I have to work hard to earn my place.”

At Sundowns, Zungu’s departure is reportedly one of the reasons given for the breakdown in the working relationship between former head coach Rulani Mokwena and sporting director Flemming Berg.

Just last month, it was reported he was on the verge of sealing a move to Chiefs, but the Naturena club had to off-load a number of players to make space available for the former Glasgow Rangers star.
