As leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates shift their focus elsewhere, the spotlight will be on which team will make gains on some of the top eight positions or even a possible top three finish that still remains alive at this stage.
Six points separate eighth-placed Kaizer Chiefs from third-placed Stellenbosch FC in a season where pretty much every team in those positions has had a decent fair share of wins.
But they have also had a season that has been all over the map, and hardly stayed on course with their inconsistent results.
Here, Obakeng Meletse goes through the three key talking points to look out for heading into this weekend’s fixtures...
Kaizer Chiefs must back up talk on the field
Nasreddine Nabi was clear from the moment he arrived that, as much as Rome wasn’t built in a day, the expected return to being one of the best sides in the country would also not come overnight for Chiefs.
Hope was restored with some early wins but with the season gaining momentum, the Amakhosi lost ground to the front runners and one could see what Nabi had referred to early on in his tenure.
The Tunisian mentor is still yet to have his best starting XI, and a lot of that has come down to indifferent showings from a squad that have not always lived up to their full potential.
As a result, their top eight position remains a heartbeat away from collapse, with those chasing them having a few games in hand.
Everyone concerned needs to take responsibility and deliver performances, as a top eight finish also has a huge bearing on the start of next season with the MTN8 competition.
Manqoba Mngqithi homecoming critical to top eight aspirations
The former Sundowns coach made a return to the KwaZulu-Natal outfit Golden Arrows in time to help them jump a hurdle they have been stumbling over for the last three seasons.
Abafana Bes’thende have finished in ninth position for the last three seasons.
They last made the top eight in the 2020/21 season with a fourth-place finish in what was a good season for the KZN clubs, with AmaZulu also ending the season as runners-up to Sundowns.
Currently 10th with 24 points from their 19 matches, Arrows have three games in hand over Chiefs to make up a deficit of five points.
And as the two sides are set to clash, their battle will have a lot to say in their top eight aspirations.
Battle for third place could take shape
Stellenbosch FC are in pole position to secure what will be their second consecutive third-place finish.
TS Galaxy and Polokwane City are lurking in the background, and any slip-ups could prove costly for either of the teams.
Sekhukhune United will be competing in the last eight of the Nedbank Cup against Sundowns, and could lose a bit of ground by the time they next take on the field in the league.
Rise and Shine need to make the most impression this weekend amongst all of the top six teams, as their recent run of form has only seen them pick up two points from their last five matches.
