Jose Mourinho checked out of Manchester’s plush Lowry Hotel on Tuesday at the end of an 895-day stay estimated to have cost £537 000 (over R9.6 million).
Mourinho held an emotional ‘last supper’, albeit at lunchtime, amid tearful scenes at the hotel he called home while at Manchester United.
Fresh from his sacking, Mourinho drove to the Lowry to settle his account.
One resident, who did not wish to be named, said Mourinho had a final meal at lunchtime in the hotel bar when he returned from Carrington to end a stay of two years and five months.
“He was having a snack and saying his goodbyes,” a source said. “He made a point of seeking some people out. He looked in good spirits.
“A lot of the staff appeared to be upset, and a couple went in for a hug.”
Mourinho is understood to have settled his room service bill for his plush Riverside Suite on a weekly basis.
The suite costs £600 a night, leaving Mourinho’s estimated bill at over £500k.
Many staff were said to be “heartbroken”.
There will also be sad faces at his favourite Brazilian restaurant Bem Brasil, and Juan Mata’s Tapeo eaterie nearby.
