Benni McCarthy believes that Bafana Bafana stars Teboho Mokoena and Ronwen Williams both have the potential to thrive in top leagues in Europe.
Both Williams and Mokoena are Mamelodi Sundowns players, have been crucial to Sundowns' dominance in the PSL. They have each won the coveted Player of the Season award.
The duo has also been instrumental for the national team, standing out during the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year in Côte d'Ivoire, where Bafana secured a bronze medal.
Williams has also made made history as the first South African and the first African to be nominated for the prestigious Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d'Or awards while playing on the continent.
Speaking to SuperSport, McCarthy said Mokoena and Williams have the attributes to play in Europe and even the Champions League.
“Ronwen Williams, I think the player that I like a lot is Teboho Mokoena from Sundowns, he also is player that has the attributes and the ability to play in Europe.
“And when we say in Europe not there in.... let me not name but in the Champions League that we watch here in Mzansi. He has the ability to play at that level,“ McCarthy said.
McCarthy added that both Williams and Mokoena have been consistent with their performances and suggested that maybe club’s don’t want to part with their best players.
“If they will get there (Europe) I don’t know because I’m not their coach and I’m not at the the club ‘s that they play for so maybe club’s don’t want to let go of their best assets and rightfully so,” McCarthy added.
McCarthy, who part of Erik ten Hag’s back-room staff at Manchester United also made headlines last week after he said that the Dutchman lacked passion and fire.
His comments, however, did not sit well with Ten Hag, who responded by saying he was unsure what McCarthy was referring to, given his success in winning multiple titles as a coach highlighting that such achievements would not have been possible without passion.
