CAPE TOWN – His shibobo may have gone viral, but Mamelodi Sundowns star Themba Zwane insists that he needs to work on his consistency to keep his place in the team.
Zwane was the talk of Mzansi on Tuesday night after he flummoxed Sbusiso Mbonani of Polokwane City with a stunning piece of skill in Masandawana’s 2-0 victory at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
It was sweet revenge for Sundowns, who lost home and away to Rise and Shine in the Absa Premiership last season.
Zwane flicked the ball through the legs of Mbonani with a back-heel near the byline, but was unable to find an unmarked Lebohang Maboe with his pass.
“I saw that he (Mbonani) was coming with speed and power while the ball was rolling towards my direction,” Zwane told the Sundowns website on Thursday.
“I decided to just put the ball in between his legs and I gave him a shibobo. But I wasn’t happy with my final pass to Lebohang Maboe after that move.
“I apologised to Mbonani after the game, but he told me that he would get me in the second round.”
But ahead of Saturday’s MTN8 opener against Golden Arrows at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, Zwane is keen to improve on his passing skills.
“I need to work on consistency. That’s very important. I need to improve in terms of finishing and making the right decisions in the final third,” he said.
“If you check here at Sundowns, each and every game we play, we need to be on a high and deliver because there are a lot of players here who have quality.
“You need to work for your place. This season I want to work hard. I want to play as many games as I can.”
