During his side’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola  did achieve one small victory over the home fans at Anfield.

A 12th minute goal from Cody Gakpo and a penalty from Mohamed Salah in the final quarter secured all three points for the table toppers, as they moved 11 points clear of the champions City.

In the last seven seasons, City have won six league titles to the one of Liverpool.

The result left City in the unfamiliar fifth position on the table, while Brighton moved ahead in fourth place. Chelsea were third and Arsenal second, both nine points behind Liverpool.

Touché Pep

Guardiola reminded fans of that fact as they began a chant of “sacked in the morning’ as the impending defeat would be City's sixth in seven games.

Guardiola turned to the crowd with a wry smile and held up his hands and indicated the number six with his fingers.

Despite the poor run City are on, Guardiola has recently extended his contract to 2027 but has insisted he will not stay if he doesn’t feel welcome if performances don’t improve.

"All the stadiums want to sack me, it started at Brighton (in City's 2-1 defeat on November 9)," said Guardiola.

"Maybe they are right with the results we've been having.”

Though the 53-year-old would have been disappointed by the low blow from the Liverpool fans, he said he still respected them.

"I didn't expect that at Anfield. I didn't expect it from the people from Liverpool but it's fine," added Guardiola.

"It's part of the game, and I understand completely. We've had incredible battles together. I have a respect for them."
