Durban — Franki Smit will become the first graduate in her family when she graduates from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) on Thursday.
Smit, 24, from Stellenbosch, Western Cape made her family proud as she is set to graduate cum laude with her Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics at the DUT 2024 Spring Graduation at the Durban Exhibition Centre.
The Smit family has reached a milestone moment with the success of their first graduand, setting the stage for a legacy of academic excellence that will be remembered for generations to come. This achievement marks a significant breakthrough, not just for the individual, but for the entire family.
Smit had always wanted to pursue a practical profession within the medical field and worked hard to get into the programme. Her dream finally came true as she is now working in the medical field at Stellenbosch Orthopaedics.
Smit said her goal is to have her orthotist practice one day.
“I align myself with all of DUT ENVISION2030 living values and principles, but honesty and transparency resonate with me the most. I think that honesty and open communication are vital for building trust and creating a healthy and productive atmosphere in every area of life,” Smit said.
She said that her family is incredibly proud of her and expressed immense pride in her achievement, particularly since she is the first member of the family to attain this level of academic success.
Smit explained the importance of conducting thorough research, understanding the full scope of what one is getting one’s self into, and ensuring that one is genuinely enjoying their field of study.
Smit also mentioned that she enjoys playing sports in her free time. She believes sports help clear her mind and make her feel more focused.
“I was a national-level artistic gymnast, and since retiring from competitive gymnastics, I have discovered a new passion for kite surfing,” Smit said.
Additionally, Smit gave a heartfelt shout-out to her closest friends, who had been her constant source of strength and encouragement. Through thick and thin, they had stood by her, proving that no one needs to face challenges alone.
She mentioned that building a supportive community is important because when individuals work together towards a common goal, they can achieve far more than they could alone.
