The annual 4-day kykNET Silwerskerm Festival always concludes with a glitzy award ceremony. Last year, the channel decided to go big with the kykNET Silwerskerm Awards for Film and TV by holding it at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), thereby allowing fans an opportunity to attend the blue carpet event.

The 12th iteration of the festival, which ran from August 28 to 31, was another roaring success.

Aside from the mind-blowing films that premiered alongside short films, documentaries as well as panel discussions, the celebration of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes were unmistakable.

On Saturday night, the who’s who from the Afrikaans film-making industry were in attendance at the awards ceremony.

The foyer echoed with excited banter as the celebrities posed on the blue carpet and then scurried around catching up with peers and industry friends.

The energy was truly infectious and the awards ceremony was elegant and flowed beautifully with several performances by exceptional artists like Karen Zoid and the Van Pletzen group added to the line-up.

And the heartfelt speeches complemented the celebratory spirit.

One of the standout moments of the ceremony was the recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Awards: Denise Newman, Hans Strydom and TV producer, Roberta Durrant.

Before their honours were bestowed upon them, a close industry colleague who witnessed their career path from the apartheid era to the transformation of television in South Africa in 1976 recounted their journey.

This was followed by a short video of their journey through the years.

Vinette Ebrahim, who many will remember as Charmaine Meintjies from the SABC2 soapie, “7de Laan”, paid such a beautiful tribute to Newman that when the actress got on stage, there was very little for her to add.

Another memorable moment was Jill Levenberg stepping onto the stage to receive the Best Actress in a Telenovela or Soap honours for “Suidooster”.

In her speech, she recalled how she was approached by a 91-year-old Muslim woman, who thanked her for being able to see herself through Levenberg’s role as Mymoena Samsodien, who was in a polygamy storyline alongside Cedwyn Joel as her on-screen husband, AB, who took on a second wife.

It was also a big night for Showmax’s series, “Koek”, which cleaned up with several accolades, as well as the feature film, “Som van twee”, which marked the directorial debut of Simoné Pretorius. “Wyfie” also won a few honours, too.

The awards ceremony was recorded and screened on kykNET on Sunday night.

Interestingly, the channel celebrates its 25th milestone anniversary this year.
