Social media is a part of our lives because not only does it help us communicate and connect with people from all over the world, but it also plays a significant role in discovering hidden talent.

With that said, the South African Social Media Awards (Sasma) returns for another season to honour Mzansi content creators, who use social media to make a difference and spread positivity.

Under the theme “My World, My Story!", Sasma invited participants and audiences alike to reflect on the powerful stories shared through social media—stories that connect us, shape our worldviews, and drive change.

For example, when content creator Onezwa Mbola started posting her videos on TikTok, she gained traction because she teaches people about organic food, advocates for sustainability and inspires others to plant fruit and vegetables.

Another example would be the story of nutrition specialist and body-builder Makgato Maite, who took to TikTok to speak about surviving abuse, child loss and depression.

Her story was one of the most trending in August last year because it reflected the realities of many women and, therefore, relatable.

The awards will not only highlight the best in the industry but also foster connections and collaborations among the leading voices in social media.

Nominees for this year will be announced on Friday, August 16.
