Durban – The uMzinyathi District Municipality mayor, Petros Ngubane, has condemned the damage done the town’s to infrastructure after water tankers were set alight in Dundee last night (Thursday).
The municipality officials woke up to the news of burnt water tankers on Friday morning.
These tankers were used to transport water to the rural areas of Endumeni Local Municipality, Dundee surrounding areas in the north of KwaZulu-Natal
According to Ngubane, it was unfortunate that an incident of this magnitude would occur, particularly during a period where the municipality was plagued by water issues.
“It is unfortunate that while we are faced with a water crisis, people would decide to damage the very infrastructure that was meant to provide relief. I am particularly saddened by this action as it will result in a regression in terms of development,” he said.
Ngubane added that he wanted the investigation processes to be completed swiftly and thoroughly, in order to bring the perpetrators to book.
“As the municipality, we hope that those who are guilty of this will be found and arrested soon. We also call on the community to play their part by working with law enforcement to ensure that those who are responsible are found,” he added.
Investigations by police are continuing.
