On Tuesday evening, a residential 3-story building under construction collapsed at the intersection of Smew Avenue and Guinea Fowl Street in Lenasia. Emergency Management Services (EMS) reported receiving a call about the incident at around 19:45.

According to eyewitnesses, the collapse was preceded by a loud sound, and people nearby rushed to the scene. EMS, tow trucks, and local security companies quickly responded to the incident.
Joburg EMS spokesperson Nana Radebe-Kgiba said upon arriving at the scene, they were told two people were at the site of the incident, but after conducting the search and talking to community forums, they can confirm that only one person was present when the building collapsed.
“We’ve been talking to eyewitnesses and people who live around that were there when the incident happened, they said the was only one person at the building. We also started with a search and rescue when we received the reports about the second person, but we can now confirm that there was only one person that was at the building at the time of the incident,” said Radebe-Kgiba.
She stated that a male in his mid-30s was rushed to the hospital and that the family of the individual had been notified.
“The person was rushed to a nearby clinic, and after he was taken to Baragwanath Hospital. He has injuries to the head, he was stable but in a critical condition,” said Radebe-Kgiba.
She further stated that investigations would be conducted to determine the cause of the building collapse.
