Following the resounding success of ‘Losing Lerato’, Bakwena Productions is in works for the continuation of this heart-warming tale that spotlights between the deep love between a father and daughter.

Nearly 10 years after the local film first made its debut and won numerous awards, ‘Losing Lerato 2’ returns with new cast members on August 2 on Netflix, satisfying the audience’s curiosity about what happens next.

The star-studded cast includes Kagiso Modupe, Nefisa Mkhabela, Zolisa Xaluva, Samela Tyelbooi, Zia Kani, Lerato Kani, Lerato Marambe, Aubrey Poo, and Dineo Langa, among other talented stars.

Producer, director, and actor Modupe has been teasing fans with glimpses of the movie on social media, stirring excitement and alerting audiences to prepare for an emotional roller coaster.

In a video shared on Instagram, he said: “Losing Lerato 2 has been a long time coming; it has been in the pipeline; we just needed the right place and the right home for it. And we already knew when we did ‘Losing Lerato 1’ that there needed to be a sequel, and how ‘Losing Lerato 1’ ends, you can tell there needs to be a sequel. So we finally got the opportunity, and we are out here and we are doing it. It's going to be a killer one, man.

“And with this one as well, it is still going to touch on the same issues that ‘Losing Lerato 1’ did. But it is just escalated now. ‘Losing Lerato’ one is a love story, and ‘Losing Lerato 2’ is a continuation of that love story between a father and a daughter. And we are aware that this is not his biological daughter, and the whole point of this is to show that you can be a dad and a father, but it takes a lot for you to become a dad. And with this as well, the relationship that Thami had built with his daughter is a lifetime relationship.’’

Speaking about the film’s upcoming release, executive producer Rashaka Muofhe advised audiences to get ready for a sobering lesson in the nature of true love.

“You have seen what we do as Bakwena productions: we tell true South African authentic stories that have a global effect, so our story is not just a South Africa, African story; it is a story that’s out there that touches the world, which is a bond between a father and a child. But more specifically, a father and a daughter with everything that is going on in the world and the challenges that people face. This touches on a love story, the impact of that bond between a father and a daughter, family values, and how they come to play. How even the bad guys can become the good guys.”
