ISABELLA Simone Chitharai is on a winning streak.

Last month, she participated in the African Union Sports Council, Union of African Karate Federation Region 5 championship in Namibia and won one gold and two bronze medals in the under-14 category.

Thereafter, she participated in the KwaZulu-Natal Women’s Cup 2024 and won triple gold, and last week she won one gold and two silver medals at the South African Open.

The 12-year-old of Palmview, in Phoenix, said she had many goals.

“I want to achieve my continental colours and hopefully go to the world championships or even the Olympics. In terms of academics, after I matriculate, I want to be a scientist,” said the Grade 7 pupil at Palmview Primary, the school’s head prefect.

Isabella is a member of the Palmview Karate Club and currently has a brown belt.

“I train five to six times a week, three days at the dojo and three days at home, where I have my own training room. I don’t have a diet plan, but I watch what I eat. I try to avoid having a lot of food containing sugar and I eat a lot of fruits,” she said.

Isabella said that the competition in Namibia was her first international tournament, but it would not be her last.

“For now, my next competition is the National Women’s Cup 2024 in Mpumalanga on August 25.”

In her free time, Isabella plays volleyball, paints and plays the piano.

Her father, Gerald Chitharai, a business application specialist, said his wife Shantal got their daughter started in karate when she was 5.

“With the crime rate being so high, her mum thought it would be a great way to learn self-defence. We are extremely proud of Isabella. She wants to be a world champion and I know she will get there.”

Sensei Shivona Deepchund, of the Palmview Karate Club, said Isabella had proved that hard work and dedication pays off.

“She has been consistent throughout the year and was able to achieve her Protea colours at a young age. Seeing her achieve her goals makes me extremely proud. Her potential is limitless, and I expect great things from her in the upcoming events,” said Deepchund.

Isabella’s school principal, Dr Deshini Pillay, said: “Isabella is an exemplary pupil and athlete who consistently demonstrates exceptional dedication and skill in both academics and karate. Her outstanding karate performance showcases her discipline, focus and perseverance, earning her top recognition in local and regional competitions. Her commitment to excellence in both areas is truly commendable.”
