Chinese man nabbed with diesel, fireworks

Jacobsdal - A Chinese national who is in police custody on charges of being possession of over a kilolitre of suspected stolen diesel and illegally storing fireworks was expected to apply for bail on Thursday, Free State police said on Wednesday.

Xiahau Chen, 34, was arrested on Friday after police raided his house.

“When they arrived at his house, the police found about 1 335 liters of diesel and ±R50 000 worth of fireworks stored at his house,” police spokesman Thabo Litabe said.

“The origins of these goods are still not known to the police but it is believed that the diesel was taken from the farms in the area of Jacobsdal. He could not provide the police with any documentation for the items and was arrested on the spot.”

Chen made his first court appearance on Monday. He is expected back in the Jacobsdal Magistrate’s Court on Thursday where he will make a formal attempt at getting bail.
