Blomfontein - A man who killed his wife and mother-in-law has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for murder on Wednesday by the Bloemfontein High Court.

Warrant Officer Zweli Mohobeleli said Shaun Rolls, 27, was also sentenced to eight years for the attempted murder, six months for malicious and three months for assault.

Mohobeleli said the sentences would run concurrently. He said Rolls became blind after he shot himself.

Rolls, a security guard, followed his 27-year-old wife to her parent’s home in Pieter Swart, Mangaung after an argument on January 21, 2014, and he broke several windows and assaulted her.

“The following day (January 22) Rolls returned armed with his official firearm. He shot his wife, mother-in-law, 65, and the father-in-law, 78,” Mohobeleli said.

He then turned the gun on himself, resulting in permanent blindness in both eyes.

Mohobeleli said both the wife and her mother were declared dead on the scene, while the father was hospitalised and later discharged.
