Bloemfontein - Nine people, aged between 30 and 40, were arrested on Tuesday, in connection with the murder of a 27-year-old man, Free State police said.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Zweli Mohobeleli said the man was allegedly assaulted by members of the public on Thursday.

“He was accused of being part of a group that robbed a house in Turflaagte Mangaung earlier in the week,” Mohobeleli said.

Mohobeleli said it was alleged that a group of men entered the house and threatened occupants with knives before taking cash, cellular phones, and a music system.

“It is further alleged that residents searched and caught the 27-year-old who was assaulted, hospitalised and later died.”

The nine are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lt-Gen Simon Mpembe congratulated members of the police for reacting swiftly.

“We urge members of the community to work with the police in the fight against crime. It is a criminal offence to take the law into your own hands,” he said in a statement.
