Sasolburg – Six people, including two children, died in a head-on collision on the R37 between Heilbron and Sasolburg in the Free State on Saturday night, paramedics said.

“The collision occurred late last night [Saturday] and involved only two light motor vehicles,” ER24 spokesman Pieter Rossouw said on Sunday.

“According to eyewitnesses, one of the vehicles allegedly swerved into the oncoming lane and then collided head-on with the other vehicle,” he said.

When ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene they found that among the dead patients were a seven-year-old boy and a teenage girl of about 14.

One person, a pregnant woman, survived the collision.

ER24 paramedics treated and transported her to Sasolburg Provincial Hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the collision was unknown, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigation, Rossouw said.
