Durban –

This week we visited Overport. Our three-hour journey took us to all the nooks and crannies of the busy Moses Kotane (Sparks) and Felix Dlamini (Brickfield) roads.

In just a 1km stretch you’ll find everything from eateries and bakeries to seafood, meat and fresh produce stores as well as clothing, junk and home stores, dress makers and many beauty and hair salons.

I turned into the first parking lot and strolled around – to find the following treasures.

Food

In Moses Kotane, you can never go hungry, especially if you’re looking for good, tasty food on a budget. Pizzaritto specialises in pizza, pasta, burgers and much more.

If you want something a little spicier, be sure to try out Baba’s Tikka, which offers a range of spicy food and pita bread.

Purple Burger makes mouth-watering burgers. There is a variety to choose from. And if you plan to sit down, kids can play in the Planet Purple play area.

Nita’s Curry Den, in a small container kitchen in Felix Dlamini, has lovely, affordable home-cooked curries.

Beauty Parlours

There are a lot of beauty parlours on both stretches. We visited 5 Star Hair and Beauty Salon in Moses Kotane, where men can get their hair cut, head massaged and face shaven, all for a reasonable price by Pakistani nationals. Women can indulge in a manicure, pedicure or wash, cut and set.

At Forever Beauty, in Felix Dlamini women can having their eyebrows waxed or threaded for a mere R5. They also offer manis, pedis and more.

Bakery

Al-Ameens, 63 Moses Kotane, specialises in cakes, biscuits, bread and frozen savoury snacks. It has been around for more than five years and is owned by Ashraf Amon. Pop in or call them at 031 207 6514 to place orders.

Homeware

Simple Home @ 202 Felix Dlamini has amazing collectables for your home. Furniture, cutlery and glassware are sold here. From low to high end homeware, you can get it all…

Produce

Farmers Produce, 179 Moses Kotane, sells fresh fruit and vegetables. One of the longest-standing shops in the road, it has been run by the Govender brothers for 33 years.

Not only can you buy the freshest produce here, but we found canned food, detergents, baking ingredients, masala, pickles and even broomsticks.

Other stores worth checking out:

* Marcellos and Seaco Cash and Carry.

* Fabric stores in Felix Dlamini include Textrim, Mate’s Fabric and Bassa’s.

* Clothing and shoe shops include Nu-shop, Moondrops and Sabha Collection.
