Durban - The Easter Weekend is expected to bring in R200 million in economic spend in Durban, according to tourism boss, Phillip Sithole.
This will be boosted in part by R30m which will be brought into the city’s economy by the 15 000 people expected to flock to People’s Park for two major events.
“Durban is already a popular tourist destination for the Easter period but we’re expecting more visitors because of the Chris Brown concert on Saturday and the Durban Picnic Day at People’s Park.”
Sithole said research by Durban Tourism showed that the beach was still a major draw card, especially for visitors from Limpopo.
“Durban now has a lot more to offer. In one day, you can go to the beach, a game drive and a township tour. Places like Max (Lifestyle) and Eyadini (Lounge), which we did not have five years ago, are becoming attractions in their own right.”
Sithole believes safety and security, especially in the CBD, is also a contributing factor in attracting holidaymakers to the city.
eThekwini Municipality spokeswoman, Tozi Mthethwa, said there would be visible policing with metro police patrolling to ensure law and order, especially on the roads.
“We appeal to people to obey the law, be patient and not drink and drive.”
