As SOUTH Africa celebrates Tourism and Heritage Month, Cape Town’s Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, bagged the 28th spot in the global ranking of the World’s 50 Best Hotels this year.

The hotel has been part of South Africa’s hotel industry for 125 years and has been been captivating visitors since 1899.

Mount Nelson, also known as The Nellie, was recognised in the presence of industry-defining hotels from across six continents at an awards ceremony at the Guildhall in London.

The iconic hotel is skirted by mountain and metropolis and fuses its 125 years of heritage with 21st century relevance in the urban heart of the city, surrounded by the country’s leading designer boutiques and buzzing cafés.

Commenting on the win, Tiago Moraes Sarmento, area managing director, Belmond Southern Africa, said their daily focus is on how they make guests and staff feel.

“We have the ability to influence that narrative by creating unforgettable moments that epitomise slow luxury for the modern traveller.

“We are so thrilled to be recognised for the passion and dedication of our extraordinary colleagues who continue to craft magic for our guests and make people smile,” he said.

Belmond’s legendary property, Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, Riviera Maya was named at 18th place and won the Flor de Caña Eco Hotel of 2024 while the Mount Nelson was named the best hotel in Africa.
