Cape Town - Theatre dance enthusiasts are in for a vibrant evening as the WGRUV Dance Company wrapped up the Cape Town leg of its much-anticipated production, Trilogy of Notes – A Symphony of Dance.
This visually stunning performance began on October 17 at The Star Theatre, Homecoming Centre, and after a three-day run, the company is set to whisk this extraordinary show off to Johannesburg.
WGRUV Dance Company, renowned for its innovative and captivating performances, continues its mission of inspiring hope through heartfelt artistic storytelling.
Similar to the two successful seasons that preceded it, the current offering promises to enchant audiences throughout the night.
The programme kicked off with the premiere of a restaging of Vivace Motifs, masterfully choreographed by the esteemed American choreographer Jessica Lang.
Known for her visual beauty and emotional depth, Lang’s work is expected to create an elegant ambience, setting the stage for a night overflowing with passionate expression.
The evening progressed into an original piece titled Permission to Fall, an evocative contemporary narrative created by the talented Brad Beakes, who joined WGRUV for a two-week residency. This piece, set to music by Ryan Lot and Ymusic, invites audience reflection, creating a rich tapestry of thought and sentiment.
Artistic Director Holly Gruver expressed her excitement for the project.
“This masterpiece is born from a profound love of classical music, drawing inspiration from the intricate compositions of Handel and Corelli, alongside the modern and genre-blending ensemble music of Ryan Lot and Ymusic, complemented by the smooth, jazz-inflected sounds of June Christy.”
Gruver further elaborated on the collaborative effort that has gone into the creation of Trilogy of Notes.
“WGRUV has had the honour of working with some world-renowned choreographers, including the poetic Jessica, the inventive Brad, and the distinguished Michael Trusnovec,” she noted.
“Creating Trilogy of Notes has been a labour of love, involving countless hours of dedication, creativity, and collaboration. Every step, every note, has been meticulously crafted to ensure that this performance resonates deeply with each person in the audience.”
The evening’s performance transports audiences back to the 1950s with Trusnovec’s dynamic piece; a creation bolstered by live musician Emmanuel Paul’s bass notes, which enhance the atmosphere through the music of Christy. This original work promises to provide a delightful experience, perfect for a romantic date night or an enriching family outing.
