Somerset Mall, a key shopping destination in the Helderberg region, is gearing up for a significant expansion that promises to transform the retail landscape of the Western Cape.

With a first phase slated for completion by November 2025, the project will introduce an impressive 5 500 square metres of new retail space, enhancing the shopping experience for its visitors.

“Somerset Mall’s expansion is about more than just adding space; it’s about creating a place that brings people together. This redevelopment will elevate the shopping experience with timeless design and enhanced amenities, making the mall a true hub for connection and community,” shared Mandy Bellamy, General Manager of Somerset Mall.

The ambitious project aims to solidify Somerset Mall’s status as the premier retail and leisure hub in Somerset West. Conveniently situated at the bustling intersection of the N2 and R44 highways, the mall currently attracts a diverse clientele, from local residents to international visitors.

Wayne Abegglen, Hyprop Portfolio Executive for the Western Cape said the redevelopment is designed to capitalise on Somerset West’s rapid growth.

“As part of the expansion, over 50 new stores will soon join the mix, focusing on popular athleisure and

affordable luxury brands, as well as family entertainment and an expanded variety of food and dining options. The improvements also include modernised customer amenities aiming to set a new benchmark for retail excellence in the area.”

This redevelopment is not simply about increasing retail space; it addresses an evident demand by introducing a broader array of offerings tailored to evolving shopper preferences.

The planned transformation will involve retiling the entire centre with contemporary designs, upgrading restroom facilities to contemporary, high-quality standards, and introducing family-friendly entertainment spaces. These enhancements will foster a sophisticated environment that prioritises comfort and convenience.

Beyond shopping, Somerset Mall’s redevelopment envisions itself as a community-focused destination, featuring luxurious restrooms, enhanced dining experiences, and exciting entertainment options. Innovative offerings such as electric vehicle charging stations, a golf cart shopper shuttle, and a vibrant art mile showcasing the work of renowned sculptor Marco Olivier are set to differentiate the mall within the competitive retail landscape.

The demographic profile surrounding Somerset Mall reveals a catchment area consisting of 44.4% upper-middle-income earners, validating the project’s potential to boost local growth. Currently attracting over 9.3 million visitors annually, the redevelopment is expected to further increase foot traffic, tenant revenue, and regional investment.
